Take time to smell the roses at UCD

UC Davis is hosting its seventh annual Rose Weekend event on May 3-4. Both days include tours, information booths and a rose sale. Saturday will feature special guest speakers for a rose program.

The event, sponsored by the California Center for Urban Horticulture and Foundation Plant Services, is free and open to the public.

Bus tours from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. showcase 8 acres of Foundation Plant Services roses open to the public just for this event on both Saturday and Sunday.

Information booths include a UC Master Gardener booth to answer questions about roses on both days.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, noted English rosarian Peter Boyd will give a talk titled “An Introduction to the History of Garden Roses with Special Attention Given to Scots Roses.” At 11 a.m., Christian Bedard, a rose breeder from Weeks Roses, will speak about “Breeding and Selecting Roses for the 21st Century.”

The rose sale will have 38 rose varieties to choose from, including hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas and English-style roses. Free mini floribunda roses will be given to attendees on both days, while supplies last. Sweet potato plants also will be available for sale.

Rose Weekend takes place at Foundation Plant Services, 455 Hopkins Road on the UCD campus.
