The nonprofit Otwetiri Project will host its third annual “A Taste of Ghana” dinner and silent auction Saturday, Oct. 22, to raise money to help furnish a school in a rural village in that country. The event will run from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St.
The Davis-based nonprofit has raised more than $35,000 through the dinners and community garage sales, enough to pay for the construction of the school with previous events. Its goal now is to buy tables, desks, school supplies and computers.
The organization was founded by Tometi “Tim” Gbedema, an Otwetiri native and Davis resident who completed his doctorate in geography at UC Davis. He has coached soccer both for Davis High School and for local youth teams.
The Otwetiri Project also sponsors the Davis California Challenge Cup or D3C Tournament, an annual soccer competition in Otwetiri and neighboring villages. The competition serves as an educational incentive, because all participants must be students in good standing. Winning teams receive a rotating trophy and a small cash prize to help purchase teaching supplies.
Tickets to A Taste of Ghana are $40 each. To purchase tickets, learn about sponsoring the event or donate to the silent auction, contact Toni Smith [email protected]
