Shoppers at the Davis Farmers Market on Saturday will be able to taste shiitake mushroom soup and pick up a free Thanksgiving feast guide of recipes from “The Davis Farmers Market Cookbook.”
The market runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Central Park, Fourth and C streets in downtown Davis.
The guide includes cookbook recipes for appetizers, salads, vegetables, sides, meats (besides turkey), condiments and desserts. It also includes a menu for “A Thanksgiving to Remember” suggested by the cookbook authors Georgeanne Brennan and Ann Evans.
Volunteers from Davis Farm to School will serve up free samples of shiitake mushroom soup, prepared by Dominic Machi, director of Student Nutrition Services for Davis Joint Unified School District, and his staff, and based on a recipe in the market cookbook.
Looking for the perfect Thanksgiving hostess gift? Market Association Board members Diane Parro and Lisa Fischer will be selling spiral-bound copies of “The Davis Farmers Market Cookbook” ($20, including tax) right next to the tasting.
The cookbook takes a seasonal approach with its recipes and bases them on ingredients that can be found at farmers markets. It celebrates one of California’s earliest and most renowned markets and the food produced by California’s small farms.
Authors Brennan, an award-winning cookbook author and Winters resident, and Evans, a former Davis mayor and food activist, sing the praises of the market as well as the local food showcased there every week, year-round.
“The Davis Farmers Market Cookbook” has won three awards: first place for nonfiction in the Writer’s Digest 2012 Contest for Self-Published books; first place in the 2012 National Indie Excellence Book Awards in the Regional Cookbook category; and first place in the Beverly Hills Book Awards in the regional cookbook category.
