Tremont Church celebrates 140 years

Local residents are invited to a gathering from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 1, to celebrate the 140-year-old Tremont Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8290 Tremont Road in Dixon. The church is west of Mace Boulevard (County Road 103), just south of Davis.

Refreshments will be served.

The Tremont Mite Society was formed in 1863 as the women’s social organization of the church, which was built in 1871. It has been a functioning organization since that date and is believed to be the longest-lived women’s organization in California.

“We usually have a biannual meeting to which the descendants of the founding families are invited, but this year, and in consideration of the 140th anniversary of the church, we are also inviting members of the historical community to witness, and be a part of, history itself,” according to a news release. ”Many of the families who founded the Mite Society in 1863 will be represented at the gathering.”

Descendants of pioneer families will be introduced at the gathering, but there is no set program, allowing visitors plenty of opportunity to mingle and discuss local and family history.
