Victims in fatal Capay crash identified

By March 12, 2011

California Highway Patrol officers are still investigating the cause of a weekend collision in Capay that claimed the lives of two Woodland women.

Alicia Dayo Smith, 57, and Nila Dahal, 45, both died at the scene of the crash, which occurred at 4:40 a.m. Saturday on eastbound Highway 16 near Second Street in the rural Yolo County town.

CHP Officer Cindy Leal said a Toyota Higlander driven by 26-year-old Ranjana Pokhrel of Woodland drifted off the right shoulder of the road and struck a tree. Smith was a front-seat passenger in the vehicle, while Dahal was seated in the back seat.

Both victims died of blunt-force injuries, Yolo County Chief Deputy Coroner Robert LaBrash said Monday.

All three women were wearing seat belts, Leal said. Pokhrel complained of pain to her right leg and was taken by CALSTAR helicopter to the UC Davis Medical Center, where she was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon.
