UC Davis graduate John Bissell, co-founder and CEO of Micromidas Inc., will represent the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s P3 Program at a congressional briefing Thursday.
The EPA’s P3 (People, Prosperity and the Planet) Program is a college competition to design solutions for a sustainable future, offering students hands-on experience to bring their classroom learning to life. West Sacramento-based Micromidas was a P3 Award winner in the 2007-08 competition when its co-founders were students at UCD, working with Dr. Frank Loge in the civil and environmental engineering department.
“The financial and motivational assistance provided by the EPA’s P3 Award was a key to launching Micromidas in its very earliest days,” Bissell said. “The opportunity to compete in a national competition and obtain high-level recognition focused our efforts to more expeditiously launch the company.”
The congressional briefing also is sponsored by Engineers Without Borders — USA, which addresses people’s basic human needs by providing necessities such as clean water, power, sanitation and education. The organization has chapters at UC Davis and Sacramento State.
