Even flamingos need annual checkups

Kate Gustavsen, a staff veterinarian from the UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, examines a flamingo’s eyes last week at the Sacramento Zoo. UCD veterinarians, residents and staff joined zoo vets and staff, all under the guidance of Ray Wack, the zoo’s head veterinarian and the hospital’s chief of the zoological medicine, for the annual “flamingo roundup.”

Thirty-nine birds received comprehensive physicals, West Nile Virus vaccinations, de-worming medication and new leg bands. The vets were pleased with the health of the birds, according to UCD.
