UC Davis

I-House event to aid Haitian community

By From page A8 | November 02, 2012

UC Davis students will host a night of Haitian food, music and dance at 6 p.m. on Saturday at International House to raise money to build a library in the city of Anse-à-Pitres, Haiti.

Jowell Laguerre, the president of Solano Community College and a native of Haiti, will speak at the event.

According to the host nonprofit student organization, called Ann Prepare Lavni (Let Us Prepare the Future), there are no vocational schools in Anse-à-Pitres and about 65 percent of the 8,000 residents are illiterate. The students hope to raise money to start a free, multilingual program allowing children to complete their education and learn a second language.
