The UC Davis Arboretum invites fans of good writing and beautiful gardens to enjoy a reading by poet Justin Desmangles, with musical accompaniment by Harley White Jr., at noon Thursday.

Desmangles, a native of Sacramento, is host of the weekly radio broadcast, “New Day Jazz,” on KDVS, 90.3 FM. His poetry and journalism have appeared in Amerarcana, Shuffle Boil, Konch, Drumvoices and Black Renaissance Noire.

In 2007, Desmangles was elected to the board of directors of the Before Columbus Foundation, where he is now chairman. He is an administrator of the American Book Awards and an independent producer of literary programs.

White is a prominent figure in the Sacramento music scene as a pop recording artist, an award-winning bassist with the Harley White Jr. Jazz Orchestra, a member of two Latin jazz ensembles and an impresario.

The free event will take place on the Wyatt Deck, on Old Davis Road next to the Arboretum redwood grove on the UCD campus. Parking is available for $7 in Visitor Lot 5, at Old Davis Road and A Street.
