A mistake in an email message last week led at least a handful of applicants to believe they’d been admitted to UC Davis when they had not.
At about 5 p.m. on March 20, the UCD Financial Aid Office sent out a message to about 4,144 applicants who had been offered a place on a waiting list, encouraging them to view their preliminary financial aid estimate. It opened with “Congratulations on your admission.”
By about midnight, the error had been spotted and a message of apology sent out, said Katy Maloney, the office’s director.
“I’m happy we corrected it as fast as we could, but I’m not happy it happened,” she said.
Even before the correction, those who followed instructions to see their aid estimate were led to a page noting they’d been wait-listed.
Four days earlier, emails from the admissions office went out informing students if they’d been admitted or placed on the waiting list.
The mistake still led about a half-dozen upset or confused parents or would-be Aggies to call the aid office, however. One believed admission should be granted because of the foul-up.
Alas, Maloney said, “it doesn’t work that way.”
“It was horrible,” she said of the mistake. “It’s definitely not good.”
Those offered a place on the waiting list have until April 15 to accept.
