University Farm Circle invites new and prospective members to a Newcomers Welcome Party to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the home of Carole Plack, 39306 Spyglass Place in Davis.
This informal gathering brings women of all ages together to meet new friends and learn more about this Davis social organization and its programs and activities. University Farm Circle holds numerous programs throughout the year, as well as sections devoted to special interests and activities especially for newcomers.
UFC, the oldest support group of UC Davis, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Founded in 1914, when UC Davis was still the University Farm, it provided programs, activities, and support for university women. Now with more than 500 members, UFC continues a long tradition of welcoming women to the community and its organization; membership in UFC is open to anyone supportive of UCD.
Those who are new to the area or new to UFC are invited to join Newcomers. The Newcomers co-chairs this year, Carole Plack and Karen Fess, are enthusiastic about special Newcomers activities that are planned for small groups to encourage interaction between new and continuing UFC members and provide information about the campus, community, and UFC. The Newcomers group will help members to make connections when they attend Newcomers activities, as well as UFC programs and interest sections open to all members.
Newcomers’ activities this year include an appetizer sharing and demonstration in October and a tour of the Gibson House in Woodland, followed by lunch, in November. In January, the group will meet in Winters for a historical tour and lunch.
March will feature a Garden Party in a private home with Don Shor of the Redwood Barn Nursery, Davis. In May the group will complete the year together with a Libations/Appetizer party with spouses/partners in a private home.
Newcomers are also encouraged to attend University Farm Circle programs and sections, which begin in October with the annual UFC fall tea, to be held Thursday, Oct. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Buehler Alumni Center. All are welcome to come to the tea to learn more about — and sign up for — UFC programs and sections. The highlight of the tea is the presentation of UFC scholarships to UCD students.
This year, UFC will launch a speaker series with a talk on “The Castles of Northern England” in the fall, followed by Women’s Health, Davis History and “The Empowerment of Sports and Life” in 2014.
Other fall UFC programs include an Amador wine trip in October, with shopping in Sutter Creek; a tapigami workshop and lunch in Sacramento; a “no frills” bus trip to the Fountains, with a stop at Antique Trove; a trip to the Filoli gardens for the holiday market, followed by shopping at the Stanford Shopping Center; and the annual Candlelight Dinner.
In addition, in this 100th anniversary year, numerous anniversary-related events are being planned, including a luncheon on Feb. 14, 2014, and a 100th anniversary gala in the late spring.
