USA Today is asking its readers to choose the best U.S. cycling town, running a readers’ choice poll through noon April 14. Voters can cast one ballot every day at www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-u-s-cycling-town.

“For our nominations, we went to none other than celebrated cyclist George Hincapie, a former world champion and national champion,” USA Today writes. “He took into account the cycling cities he knows and loves; cities in which he’s competed; cities with conducive weather; cities generating great buzz in the cycling community; and the places attracting cyclists on a permanent basis.

“His nominees are a broad mix of northern and southern destinations: some appeal more to competitive cyclists, while others draw recreational cyclists or mountain bikers. Our nominees offer a mix of reasons to love them: access to rental or free bikes, great bike paths, pro cycling events which are fun to watch, challenging terrain, great mountain biking, great pro cycling events, and/or an abundance of clubs and community rides.”

Davis faces competition from 19 other cities throughout the country, including two others in California — Sacramento and Malibu.

Davis’ write-up on the voting website reads, “Nicknamed ‘Bike City USA’ and the ‘Bike Capital of America,’ Davis enjoys bike lanes on 95 percent of its arterial roadways, and a whopping 22 percent of residents commute by bike. It was the first (and one of only three) cities to earn a platinum designation by the League of American Bicyclists and is home of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame.”

Other nominees are Ann Arbor, Mich.; Asheville, N.C.; Austin, Texas; Bend, Ore.; Boulder, Colo.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Durango, Colo.; Fort Collins, Colo.; Gainesville, Fla.; Greenville, S.C.; Madison, Wis.; Malibu; Minneapolis, Wis.; Moab, Utah; Park City, Utah; Portland, Ore.; Sacramento; Seattle; and Tucson, Ariz.

This isn’t the first time Davis has been part of a USA Today readers’ poll. In the spring of 2012, the Davis Farmers Market was tapped as one of the nation’s top 10 farmers markets by the national newspaper.
