A man who suffered a fatal gunshot wound in his vehicle Thursday at a Woodland shopping center appears to be a case of suicide, according to Woodland police.

Sacramento County coroner’s officials identified the man Friday morning as Xingguo Shao, a 49-year-old Woodland resident.

Sgt. Steve Guthrie said officers were dispatched at about 1:40 p.m. to the local Costco store, 2299 Bronze Star Drive, to investigate reports of a person with a gun inside a car.

“Upon arrival, officers cordoned off the area and had surrounding businesses secure their doors,” Guthrie said in a news release. “Because it was believed that the individual was in possession of a weapon and was moving around in the car, officers utilized the SWAT armored vehicle to make a safe approach.”

Officers determined that the occupant, the only person inside the vehicle, suffered what appeared to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was treated by Fire Department personnel at the scene before being transported to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where he died from his injuries.

An investigation into the cause and manner of death will be conducted by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
