Inattention was the apparent cause of a fatal crash last Thursday near the Yolo County Airport, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Debora Daily Popejoy, 63, of Sacramento, died at the scene of the 10:20 a.m. collision, which occurred on County Road 31 near County Road 95 when an eastbound big rig struck Popejoy’s westbound Honda CRV.

CHP Officer Cindy Leal reported Monday that the driver of the big rig, 42-year-old Creig Reed of Fairfield, had looked away from the road while reaching for a bottle of water, causing his vehicle to drift into Popejoy’s lane. Reed sustained minor injuries.

The incident remains under investigation, Leal said.
