Visit Quail Ridge with ecologist
Visitors are invited to walk the Quail Ridge Reserve from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20. The reserve is on a peninsula at the southwest end of Lake Berryessa.
The walk, along hillsides of California native grasses, wildflowers and trees, is of easy to moderate difficulty, and will be led by Frank Maurer, a zoologist and ecologist and executive director of the Quail Ridge Wilderness Conservancy.
The reserve is beautifully green and lush this month, and bedecked with many spring wildflowers. Toward dusk, visitors will use an ultrasonic device to hear bats as they begin their evening feeding and forest owls vocalizing. Bring binoculars, a camera and drinking water or snacks.
The group will gather at 2:30 p.m. at Markley Cove Resort to begin the walk, and will return at about 6 p.m. All participants must leave the reserve at the same time. The walk will be canceled only in the event of substantial rainfall during the day.
