Putah Creek Council seeks volunteers to help in its native plant nursery every other Tuesday evening and every other Saturday morning through the summer.

The nursery-grown native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, grasses and herbaceous plants are planted by community volunteers at habitat enhancement project sites along Putah Creek. There they provide structure, food, shelter, nesting and cover to native wildlife, improve water quality, block illegal trespass, and provide beauty and shade to human visitors.

The plants in the nursery are grown from cuttings and seeds taken from the Putah-Cache Creek watershed.

“We are currently growing plants for several big habitat planting projects which will start next fall and spring,” said Libby Earthman, Putah Creek Council executive director, “There’s a lot to do out there to get ready for this fall, but we always get a lot done and have lots of fun with the community folks who come out to help us.”

Earthman continues, “Volunteering at the nursery is really exciting because you can plant a seedling, watch it grow, and then a year later, plant it out on the creek. You can really be part of the whole restoration process.”

Every other Tuesday events are from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 25, July 9 and 23, and Aug. 6 and 20. Every other Saturday morning events are from 9:30 a.m. to noon June 29, July 13 and 27, and Aug. 10 and 24.

Tasks vary for each event, but generally include transplanting young seedlings into larger containers, weeding, organizing and cleanup.

All events are held at Putah Creek Council’s native plant nursery in south Davis from 6 to 8 p.m. Directions are provided to volunteers upon registration.
