Watch gliders soar at weekend events
Community members are invited to attend two upcoming glider events hosted by the Sacramento Valley Soaring Society at Grasslands Regional Park. The park is at Mace Boulevard and Tremont Road, about 3 miles south of Davis.
Electric gliders, some with 14-foot wingspans, will launch en masse at 10 a.m. Saturday using their electric motors, which automatically shut off at 200 meters, then hunt for thermals to stay aloft.
At the conclusion of this event, around 1 p.m., attendees of all ages can fly some of the club’s gliders with assistance from instructors.
Saturday, May 12, features a thermal duration event in which gliders are launched with a winch.
Both events run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parking and admission are free and refreshments will be for sale.
