A new community garden that will be dedicated Monday morning in Woodland will feature special areas for children, demonstration plants and an orchard.
The garden is on a quarter-acre plot of land adjacent to the Herbert Bauer Health and Alcohol, Drug & Mental Health Building, at 137 N. Cottonwood St. in Woodland. It will be dedicated at an 11 a.m. ceremony Monday.
“This garden will be a special place in our community where children and adults can come to learn about gardening and enjoy its bounty,” said Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor of Davis.
Added Laurie Green, Health Department program manager, “We wanted to use the land adjacent to our building to grow healthy food for the community and to create a space for community activities centered around the public health benefits of gardening.”
The dedication will begin with a welcome and opening remarks from Yolo County Supervisor Duane Chamberlain. Saylor, who will be the master of ceremonies, will unveil the garden’s name.
Health Department staffers have prepared the garden space, with support from several local businesses, individuals and nonprofit organizations.
