Woodland siblings keep their cool when burglar comes knocking

By June 15, 2011

Woodland police arrested a West Sacramento man on burglary charges Tuesday after receiving a 911 call from a 12-year-old boy who had armed himself with a BB gun inside the home.

Sgt. Dan Letamendi said the boy and his older sister were alone inside their Third Street home when the suspect — later identified as Jason Philip Navarrete — began pounding on the back door shortly after 8 a.m.

“When there was no response … Navarrete forced his way through the back door, entered the home, then walked around inside and removed a bottle of wine,” Letamendi said in a news release.

“As Navarrete was pounding on the door and forcing his way into the house, the 12-year-old armed himself with a BB gun while he and his 14-year-old sister called their parents and police,” Letamendi said. “Both children exited the house as Navarrete made entry.”

Officers arrived on scene several minutes later and arrested the 24-year-old Navarrete as he was walking near the front door with the stolen wine, Letamendi said.

Navarrete was lodged at the Yolo County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
