Workshop discusses ‘Healing Shame’

By From page A3 | January 22, 2013

The Woodland Community College Foster and Kinship Care Education Program will host a workshop on “Healing Shame” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The free workshop will be facilitated by therapists Bret Lyon and his wife Sheila Rubin, and will take place in the Community Room at 25 N. Cottonwood St. in Woodland. Older youths are encouraged to attend with parents or caregivers.

The workshop will help foster parents and teens, as well as therapists and other professionals, understand shame and how it shows up in family dynamics. Participants will learn to recognize and challenge negative self-talk, create a counter-shaming environment and recognize and step out of the seemingly endless negative shame spiral.
