Yolobus will attempt to fill the void left by two Yolo County school districts that have reduced or eliminated their school bus services for kindergartners through eighth-graders by offering discounted tickets to low-income students.
School bus programs fell victim to budget cuts in both the Woodland Joint Unified School District and the Washington Unified School District in West Sacramento earlier this year.
Terry Bassett, executive director of the Yolo County Transportation District, said Yolobus will try to pick up some of the slack by extending “Summer Sizzler” fares through the end of August and by offering discount youth tickets to low-income students beginning Sept. 1.
The Summer Sizzler fare of 35 cents per boarding will continue for all students between the ages of 5 and 18 until Aug. 31. The two affected school districts will begin selling “Gus the Bus Club” tickets for the same 35 cents per boarding to students who meet the income limit — generally those students who qualify for free- or reduced-price lunches or are identified as low-income by their school district.
Families will be able to purchase 10 rides for $3.50.
Bassett noted that Yolobus will not be altering its routes or schedules in the two affected districts and students will be riding with the general public, not on “school buses.”
