An aerial view shows Monticello Dam and the Glory Hole at right. At the base of the dam, there is a hydroelectric power plant, which generates power mainly for the north San Francisco Bay Area. Construction of the dam began in 1953 and was completed in 1957. It created Lake Berryessa and gets its name from the town of Monticello, which was vacated and then submerged in water as the lake filled up. Solano County Water Agency/Courtesy photo
