Maggie LaRochelle, a UC Davis graduate student in geography and a teaching assistant in Plant Science 49, shows new students Eric Sneathen, left, and Russell Todd how to pick leeks and trim them last Wednesday at the Student Farm. UCD used the event to celebrate the launch of a new undergraduate major — sustainable agriculture and food systems. Nine faculty from eight departments are set to lead the program, which is meant to give students an understanding of the social, economic and environmental aspects of farming and food systems. Students will learn about such issues as production, processing, distribution, consumption and waste management. About 30 students have enrolled. Also new to campus this fall: The College of Engineering will offer two new minors — energy efficiency and sustainability in the built environment — and the College of Letters and Science is
offering a new human rights minor.
