To UCDStudent: Please tell us that you’re not planning to go into medicine or any other profession in which you might be called upon to deliver a service to any sentient creature? You appear best suited for finance, or some other career in which in which your willingness to judge others as inferior to yourself – i.e. a “drain on society and a waste of a student at UCD” – and a rather remarkable deficit in the empathy department – will not impact your ability to make a ton of money.

I could not have been happier with the police actions. These protesters are a drain on society and a waste of a student at UCD. They had every opportunity to leave and chose to get sprayed in the face. I hope this was a wake up call and hopefully they will stop living off daddy’s paycheck and go get a job.

No one should be pleased to see the police dressed like a SWAT team fully militarized to deal with peaceful protesters, whatever their message. Protest is not war. The response, however, in city after city has been militarization, and the dehumanization of the protesters by the police -especially clear in the gesture of spraying them like bugs- is a complete inversion of their essential function of keeping the peace and protecting the people. The police reaction would be bizarre and comical in its excess if it weren’t so dangerous. Many would like to see the police and the protesters as enemies, yet the police figure nowhere in the basic complaints the Occupy people are citing in their protests. Economically the police should be allies of the protesters. Instead they are behaving like a militia of the rich and powerful. It is a feudal arrangement. A video like this is the best possible recruitment tool for OWS and virtually guarantees the radicalization of any involved with the scene, not to mention viewers. The politicians who apparently give orders to the police should take a good look at what is going on and ask if that is what they really want.
