Barbara C. Schlinger

By June 3, 2011

Barbara C. Schlinger moved from Davis to Citrus Heights after the loss of her mother, Hellen L. Garden Carll. On Friday, May 20, 2011, Barbara has been allowed to depart this life.

Barbara and her brothers George and Fred moved to Davis with their parents in 1935. F.L. Carll Sr. was station agent at the SP Depot, until his death. Hellen dispatched the UC Davis campus security. Barbara became a divorced mom in the early 1950s, and entered the work force, handling executive secretarial responsibilities for more than 20 years.

A longtime McClatchy employee, “Sam” took early retirement to care for her mother full time. Finding opportunities to serve others rewarding, Barbara worked and volunteered throughout our region.

Mom was a determined adversary. She had guts, fought for her rights and kept her moral compass true. Those of us privileged to know and remember her, miss her and suffer a decided loss. Yet we must continue to do what remains important. Celebrate the opportunity to help others, love one another; never forget her grace and humor, despite the pain of her passing so young at just 81.

She was ready for her close-up.
