Detlef Icheln

By June 4, 2011

March 9, 1960 – May 26, 2011

Detlef died tragically in a car accident, while walking across a busy street in Hamburg, Germany. Detlef was 14 years old when he came to America as an exchange student from Germany in 1975. His host family in Sacramento was Brian and Mary Lou Johnson, with sons Ian and Eric.

His English improved dramatically while he attended Hiram Johnson High School, and he expressed a wish to become a journalist. A year later, we tearfully said goodbye to our “German son.” Back home, his education continued until he earned a Ph.D. in chemistry. At the time of his death, he was editor in charge of Men’s Health online, Deutschland.

He leaves behind his wife Bärbel, young daughters Johanna and Isabell, parents Horst Peter and Gisela, brothers Robert and Clemens, and mother-in-law Hannalore. We all shall miss him very much and grieve his passing.
