March 14, 1922 — Feb. 3, 2011

Donna K. Edwards died in her sleep the evening of Feb. 3, 2011, surrounded by family in Davis. She was 88.

Born on March 14, 1922, in Minneapolis, she was the second of five children born to Elmer Gustav Knutson and Anna Josephine Leukuma. By the time Donna was starting school, her mother alone was raising the children out west in Reno, Nev. It was a childhood lean in worldly goods but rich in experience, giving Donna a deep love of family and a strong belief in self reliance.

As a young woman she went to work for Pacific Telephone, starting as an operator and eventually becoming a senior engineer, a position few women attained at that time. It was a career she loved and it was there she met the love of her life, John M. Edwards. They were married in 1959 and Donna spent the next 25 years gracefully juggling work and family until her retirement in 1980 and the untimely death of her beloved husband in 1984.

During the next 25 years, blessed with good health and abundant energy, Donna kept moving and growing. She developed a passion for financial investing, became an avid golfer and expressed her competitive nature as an ace bridge player. She loved to travel; be it a trip abroad, a bus caravan with friends, or just getting in her car and seeing where it might take her. She never sat still for long. At home, her ongoing interest in genealogy inspired her to create a beautiful pictorial history of the family she loved so well.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, John Edwards, and her brother Harold Knudson.

She is survived by her sister Constance Roling of Sonora, her brothers Robert Knudson of Sutter Creek and James Knudson of Yerington, Nev., as well as her stepsons Frank Edwards of Georgetown and Bill Edwards of Davis. She leaves five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and their children, all of whom will miss her and remember her with love.

A memorial will be held as spring nears.
