Frank Gordon Mitchell
Feb. 5, 1924 — Feb. 10, 2012
Frank Gordon Mitchell, age 88, passed away on Feb. 10, 2012, at Sutter General Hospital. A resident of Davis for 55 years, he is now with his wife Bea who passed last year after 62 years of marriage. The revered patriarch of the family, Gordon was a gentle and devoted soul who took great pride in his faith, family, and career.
He was born in San Jose on Feb. 5, 1924. After maintaining the family farm during World War II, he became a noted pomologist, and traveled the world to consult fruit handling and packaging processes while simultaneously teaching agricultural studies at UC Davis, the same school from which he obtained his undergraduate degree in 1949. This led to his discreet love of Aggie basketball, to which he had season tickets for more than 30 years.
His family and friends will remember him for his quick dry wit (he was nicknamed “The Brain” in high school), his encouragement of fruit consumption, religious faith, and also his endless love for his family and friends.
He is survived by his sister, Eleanor Lobach of San Jose; his children Tom (Debbi), Martha Rizzo (Robert) and Bill (Lynn); and his grandchildren Juancho (Janet Meyer), Christi, Michael Rizzo, Elizabeth Marquez (Jacob), Stephanie and Billy.
Friends are encouraged to attend a burial service at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road. A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. March 3 at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, 1701 Russell Boulevard in Davis. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation are preferred.
He will be missed terribly and treasured forever.
