April 24, 1949 — May 21, 2012
John Cadman Garretson died from heart failure on May 21, 2012, following a courageous 3 year battle against multiple myeloma.
Born on April 24, 1949, he served in Vietnam in the U.S. Marine Corps, receiving a purple heart and returning for a second tour, where he was gravely wounded exactly 42 years prior to the day he died. John worked for the state for over 25 years, and graduated from Sacramento State.
He left this world with the same curiosity, dignity and tenacity with which he lived. John was a gentle soul who loved life, was an artist and musician, and believed deeply in social justice. John also loved his family, yoga, step aerobics, expresso, the funny papers, science fiction and a good romantic comedy.
John leaves behind his loving life partner and wife, Alison Breen; sisters Helen Sears (Murven), Marilee Keene (David Shell) and Trisha Uhrhammer (Thomas); nieces Charlotte Leedom (Thomas), Stacia Uhrhammer, Emma Keene and Emily Uhrhammer; nephew Gavin Keene; and stepchildren Thomas Buckley and Margot Graham
A celebration of John’s life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road.
Remembrances can be made to Planned Parenthood, Amnesty International or Yolo Hospice.
