Dec. 2, 1959 — Sept. 11, 2011
Kristin Akin of Woodland died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at age 51, following a courageous seven-month battle against ovarian and uterine Cancer.
She was born Kristin Loveland Armstrong on Dec. 2, 1959, in Palo Alto, to Robert and Patricia Armstrong. She attended elementary school in Palo Alto and was active in Girl Scouts. In 1972, her family moved to Davis where Kristin attended Holmes Jr. High School and graduated from King High School in 1977.
Kristin’s artistic talent directed her to become a hair stylist and color specialist. Kristin brought joy and beauty to those who knew her. She had a sharp, witty sense of humor, she was a great mimic, and enjoyed making her friends, family and clients laugh.
Kristin had a kind heart and a deep sense of compassion and empathy. She was a strong, spiritual woman who approached her life and illness with faith, grace and dignity. Kristin enjoyed connecting with nature (as long as she didn’t get dirty…), and camping with her husband and her 2 dogs, attending her church’s women’s’ retreats, and she met regularly with members of her book club.
Kristin is survived by her husband Richard L. Akin; stepson Zachary Akin; her parents, Robert and Patricia Armstrong; her sister Karyn Symes; brother-in-law Dr. James Symes; her niece, Sophie Taylor Symes; her aunts Yvonne Armstrong, Katherine Armstrong of Palo Alto; her uncle William Armstrong; numerous cousins; and many very dear friends.
A service of remembrance and celebration of Kris’s life will be arranged at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kristin’s name may be made to Yolo Hospice, 1909 Galileo Ct. Suite A, Davis, CA 95618, or The American Cancer Society.
