April 21, 1939 — July 21, 2012

Ming Shyong Yang, born in Taiwan on April 21, 1939, passed away on July 21, 2012, in Davis at the age of 73. He studied agricultural chemistry at Taiwan National University before coming to the United States in 1963 to study soil physics at Utah State University. In 1974, Ming received his Ph.D. in soil science from UC Davis, and spent 32 years working for the California Water Resources Control Board as an environmental specialist, and later on as an information technology specialist.

Ming was passionate about serving his community to promote cultural and community development. He founded the Davis Chinese School to provide Chinese language, culture and arts education not only to his daughters, but to all Davis youth.

After retiring in 2005, he poured his energy into volunteering for various organizations within the Sacramento community, such as APAPA to active participation and leadership in civic and public affairs among Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, CNYCA and Sacramento Chinatown Mall to promote Chinese culture, history and art, and KMT to strengthen citizen diplomacy between the United States and Republic of China. Aside from volunteering, Ming enjoyed history, nature, reading, photography and travel. He also took pleasure in talking to anyone about any subject.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years Susie Yang, daughter Irene Yang of Davis and daughter and son-in law Faye and Henry Yang of Los Gatos.

A celebration of his life is scheduled at the Sierra Hills Park and East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Lane in Sacramento at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4.
