Oscar Edwin Bradfute, 84, died May 13, 2014, in Davis of cancer. He was born to the late John Edwin and Grace Lyle Bradfute on June 30, 1929, in Findlay, Ohio.
Oscar received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Ohio State University and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. His career was with Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center of Ohio State University in Wooster, Ohio, where he used electron microscopy to study plant viruses. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in 1953-56. In 1960, he married Anna Marie Wilson and in 1994 they retired to Santa Cruz.
Oscar was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Wooster, the First Congregational Church of Santa Cruz and the Electron Microscopy Society of Northeastern Ohio. He loved photography, travel, hiking and the study of early Christian history. Oscar had a lively sense of humor, loved to be intellectually engaged and thoroughly enjoyed life and family.
He is survived by his wife; two children, Naomi Bradfute of Nevada City and David Bradfute of San Diego; and granddaughter, Olivia Ross. He was predeceased by two brothers, John H. Bradfute and C. Lyle Bradfute. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617 or the University Retirement Community at Davis Foundation. A memorial service in southeast Ohio is being planned for the summer.
