Rafaela Rodriguez-Carboni
Oct. 24.1916 — Aug. 17, 2012
Rafaela Rodriguez-Carboni passed away peacefully on Aug. 17, 2012. Rafaela, was well-known for her cheerful and positive disposition and beautiful smile and a love of life. She was a survivor: orphaned as her mother and sibings passed away when she was 2 years old and though faced with many challenges, Rafaela always had time and kindness for all whom she met, a passion for her family, a love of cooking and gardening, and a sense of the value of her community.
Rafaela was born Oct. 24, 1916, in Chihuahua, Mexico. She was given the opportunity to attend school only until the third grad but she valued education and constantly instilled the love of learning and knowledge in her family. She worked as a cook for the Delano Unified School District for 15 years, as a farmworker for several more, and along with her husband Pete, owned a small convenience store in Castroville during the 1950s.
She moved to Davis in 2000 and resided at the Davisville Apartment Community, a senior complex where she enjoyed wonderful friends and support from not only the residents but also the staff, including Rose, Donna, Miguel and Alphonso.
She is survived by her two daughters, Vera and Dina; her son Renaldo and his wife Gloria, all of Davis; and grandchildren Mario, Selina and Tomas.
Rafaela’s family wishes to thank all of the wonderful staff at the Davis Health Center for providing excellent comfort and care, especially during the last week of life. “They became part of our family.” The family also thanks her two amazing caregivers, Irene Molina and Petra Bermudez — these women loved Rafaela as if she were there mother — and in many ways she was.
”
And finally, our family gives gratitude to all the folks in Davis who were always there for us, including Dr. Carol Grench, Sutter West and dentist Kym Wallace.”
A memorial service is pending and will be held in Delano.
