Rev. Richard Blinn, S.J.

Oct. 23, 1933 — May 11, 2011

Father Richard Blinn, S.J., 77, died in Los Gatos on Wednesday, May 11. He had been a member of the Society of Jesus for 53 years and an ordained priest for 41 years.

Father Richard was born in Nampa, Idaho, and grew up in Boise. He graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in education in 1955. In August of 1957, at the age of 23, he entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Los Gatos. He was ordained a priest on June 14, 1969. He earned a doctorate in education in 1973.

Father Richard served in a variety of capacities in pastoral and educational positions during his lifetime. In 1990 he began an 18-year association with St. James Parish in Davis.

In 2008 declining health brought him to the Jesuit retirement center in Los Gatos. He had a great love for the outdoors and the beauty of nature, which came through in his photography. He was also a gifted musician (piano, organ, cello and acoustic bass) and a composer of music for the organ and piano.

There will be a memorial Mass held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, at St. James Parish, 1275 B St. in Davis, followed by a potluck reception.
