Feb. 9, 1935 — Sept. 5, 2013

Sylvia Eunice Fishman passed on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, of cancer.

She was born and raised in California’s Bay Area. She attended Berkeley High School in Berkeley and Technical High School in Oakland and took courses at UC Berkeley. She held clerical jobs in Oakland.

She met Jerry Fishman in October 1961 in San Francisco. They began dating and were married on May 13, 1961. Sylvia and Jerry enjoyed a splendiferous marriage for 52 years in Davis. Sylvia worked at clerical jobs at UC Davis and at the Davis Joint Unified School District while Jerry worked as a community college English teacher. Their home in Davis was the epicenter for joyful, spirited social and political gatherings.

She was a bright and shining light; a woman who cared about people, who knit herself to her husband, who nurtured her sons tenderly. She leaves a void as she passes on to another realm. Om shanti shanti, Om shanti shanti, Om shanti shanti.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Fishman; her sister Delories Berry and Delories’ children Lanyard and Makeba; her deceased brother’s son David Salter; her sons, Wendell (Ruby Calhoun) and Darwin Fishman (Greta L. Goodwin); and many loving relatives and dear friends.

Wiscombe Funeral Home, 116 D St. in Davis, will host a viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Services will be held for her from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at 910 Pennsylvania Place in Davis. All are welcome.

In lieu of cards and flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sylvia Fishman’s name to Celebration Arts Theatre at 4469 D Street, Sacramento, CA 95819.
