d. Dec. 22, 2011
William George Chace died Dec. 22, 2011, in Woodland. He was 83 years old.
A native of Massachusetts, Bill spent his early years in the woods and mountains, where he developed a lifelong love of the outdoors. He referred to his first job on the trail crews in the White Mountains as the best he ever had.
He followed his father into the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict, where he served honorably aboard a mine sweeper. After the birth of his daughters, he obtained his doctorate from Michigan State University and entered his next phase of public service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he spent the rest of his career.
After 40 years as a USDA scientist, he retired to Capay, where he fulfilled a lifelong dream of farming. Although he left for several years to live in the mountains, he returned to the farmlands he loved for the last few years of his life.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Angelos and Anne Hopkins; his grandchildren, Carolyn Hopkins, David Graham and Philip Hopkins; his partner, Elizabeth Leahy; his niece, Linda Upham; and his nephew Steve Chace.
