Accountability is paramount
To Chancellor Katehi and the UC Davis community:
UC Davis has been hit hard over the past several years by relentless economic pressures stemming from the state and national economic downturn. Shrinking state support, reduced budgets for staff and faculty, and dramatically increased tuition mark a sharp turn in our trajectory.
In this situation, it is particularly important that students — the primary reason for the university’s existence — be able to nonviolently and peacefully assemble to express their views and participate in open discussions of the many difficult issues we face. We are shocked and dismayed by the apparent use of unwarranted force and violence by university police on students and members of the community last week on the Quad.
At this point, we feel it would be premature to call for any resignations in the administration, however, we do support the immediate formation of a panel to thoroughly and transparently investigate the events that occurred on Friday, Nov. 18, on the Quad. We believe in the importance of accountability in our institution and urge all members of our community to recognize their rights as well as their responsibilities.
