Don’t dismiss 40-plus years of work
I was disappointed to see the prominently placed pull quote from Tilahun Yilma in the Nov. 30 “UCD faculty come not to bury Katehi” article. In expressing support for Chancellor Linda Katehi, Yilma chose to disparage the UC Davis chancellors who preceded her.
Through their significant individual and cumulative contributions, these prior leaders provided the firm foundation and remarkable level of campus accomplishment upon which successor chancellors could build — including, for example, admission to the prestigious Association of American Universities, extraordinary increases in research funding and philanthropic gifts, transformation of Sacramento’s troubled county hospital into the remarkable UC Davis Health System, and, very importantly, the building of a campus community that regards itself as a family capable of reconciling its differences respectfully and without acrimony.
It’s unfair, and certainly uncharitable, to diminish 40-plus years of predecessor accomplishments in his singular expression of support for our current chancellor, no matter how sincere the praise.

I have 50 years of experience. UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau’s campus police report to the chancellor and the campus police take direction from the chancellor. University of California (UC) campus chancellors vet their campus police protocols. Birgeneau allowed pepper spray and use of batons to be included in his campus police protocols.
Chancellor Birgeneau’s campus police use brutal baton jabs on students protesting increases in tuition. UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau and UC Davis Chancellor Katehi are in dereliction of their duties.
Birgeneau and UC Davis Chancellor need to quit or be fired for permitting the brutal outrages on students protesting tuition increases.
