Get a job and quit whining

As a UC Davis alum and former resident of Davis, I am shocked and infuriated by the events of the past week. The students involved in the “demonstrations” are the epitome of what is wrong with America today.

First and foremost, this “Occupy” movement is absurd. Most of you don’t have a clue as to what you are demonstrating for or against and are pointing your demonstrations in the wrong direction. If you really want to see the source of what you believe is wrong in America today, take a good hard look in the mirror. It is your heavily liberal Democratic Congress and president elected by you who are largely responsible for much of what you believe is the fault of the “1 percent.”

You have grown up in a society of entitlement and somehow feel you deserve your free education and free handouts from those who have worked to become more successful than you. Most of you aren’t even old enough to have been impacted by what you claim is the travesty affecting America and yet you choose to skip classes, quit jobs and disrupt an otherwise peaceful university with students who are attempting to attend classes and make a better life and career for themselves.

Those are the students who, later in life, will become the 1 percent that you will claim somehow owe you something.

Your demonstrations, complaints and demands about recent tuition increases are just another example of your entitlement attitude. Education is not free, despite what you have been led to believe by your liberal parents and friends. Professors earn salaries; buildings and supplies cost money. Tuition increases are needed to fund your education.

You may not like it and it may hurt, but that is the reality. Why should the rest of society fund your education? I never asked anyone to fund mine. I worked! I guess that’s why I’m in the 1 percent because I considered my education at UCD a privilege and worked my butt off for 14 years to become one of the 1 percent.

Grow up, go to school, get a job and quit whining!

  1. David, your letter is incoherent. We *are* in school, as UC Davis students.

  2. Edward Broyles, UCD Alumnus

    Mr. Castro,

I am also a UCD Alum, as is my wife. I would love to have a dialogue with you on this, as I once shared some of these same thoughts.

It is fantastic for you that you are in the top 1% of income. Congratulations on earning $2 million a year! That is something to celebrate.

It is important to remember the UC was established to help make high quality education more affordable, to help not just the students, but the entire state. Our state can only get better when we have more education for more people. Are we going to lose out on a big innovation because we refuse to educate someone just because of their situation?

Education has become progressively less affordable, in ways that seem hard to understand. It far outstrips the pace of inflation and is accellerating. Why is this? We need to understand why and see what is causing it and if it is actually helping educate the students. If it is not, then we need to rethink our priorities.

To say that you never asked for help in your education is to ignore all the help you received. These students are facing an even tougher road, and it is all too easy to listen to you words as ‘Well, I got mine, so forget those lazy kids’

I hope that this helps bring you to a greater understanding of the issues here. If you are interested in honest talk about it, I’d be happy to talk to you. Again, it must be honest dialogue. Hey, this is a chance for you to bring me onto your side! We just need to use our words.

    Thank you.

  3. Uh, Broyles, he never said h was top 1%. Don’t twist people’s words. I agree 100%. A bunch of entitled brats.

  4. worked my way through

I agree with many of David’s comments–but it’s bad taste to brag about your income. My son tried to attend classes on the day of the strike and the teachers did not show up. Now Dutton is “occupied” by mostly empty tents and a few adult, non-students. I think Pike acted unreasonably but that does not mean the entire University needs to kowtow to a few misguided and stale protestors. Let’s take back our buildings and protect all vital campus activities. Anybody actually sleeping, staying with a tent outdoors in the Quad can stay in it—but once it’s unoccupied its abandoned property. That will clear this up in a few days. Their 15 minutes is OVER. Where’s the leadership??
