Get rid of the UC regents

I’ve already proposed, over KDVS and online, a solution to the problem — getting rid of the regents. The regents are established by the state constitution, so the same time spent getting signatures for a fee-limiting measure could be used on a more valuable measure — to replace the regents with the Academic Council, i.e., the chairs of the Academic Senates of the various campuses. Feel free to include a Prop. 13 addendum, but getting rid of the regents is more important.

The Academic Senate is a democratic institution that is actually active on the campuses and knows what is needed. As it is, students are accountable to faculty, faculty to administration, administration to the UC Office of the President and UCOP to the regents. But the regents are accountable to no one, hold their positions for 12 years, and get them through bribery — sorry, I mean campaign contributions.

The regents are a repressive, unnecessary anachronism and source of corruption. Several articles have been written indicating that the regents have used UC funds to enrich themselves, and if even half the rumors and stories are true, such as the ones regarding privatization of the faculty retirement fund, then the people of the state have lost billions. The regents have got to go.

  1. I’ve been saying that same thing for years…it is totally a political scam.

  2. UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau’s campus police report to the chancellor and the campus police take direction from the chancellor. University of California (UC) campus chancellors vet their campus police protocols. Birgeneau allowed pepper spray and use of batons to be included in his campus police protocols.

Chancellor Birgeneau’s campus police use brutal baton jabs on students protesting increases in tuition. UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau and UC Davis Chancellor Katehi are in dereliction of their duties.

Birgeneau and UC Davis Chancellor need to quit or be fired for permitting the brutal outrages on students protesting tuition increases.
