I disagree with calls to resign
I join in the general condemnation of the pepper spraying of students by the UCD Police Department. The rights of free speech and peaceful protest should always be protected.
However, I disagree with the calls for the resignation of Chancellor Linda Katehi, given what we currently know.
Her request to the UCD police to dismantle the tents on the Quad was not in itself a violation of anyone’s free speech rights.
And she has been leading the effort to restructure the university to survive despite ongoing cuts in state support. Creating a vacuum at the top of the campus at this time is not in the interests of either students or faculty.
