Impressed by the protesters
In response to David M. Castro’s scathing satellite rebuke of the protest movement from his residence in Chico (Letters, Nov. 27), I would like to take a moment to point out a few differences in his experience that he seems to directly apply to the current student body.
Using information contained in his letter (I do not know him personally), tuition rates verses the state minimum wage were starkly different. Tuition has since more than tripled from the time Castro attended school while the California minimum wage barely increased by half. Additionally, the job market has changed so vastly that a bachelor’s degree no longer puts you ahead of your peers like it may have when Castro first graduated.
As a former U.S. Army infantry sergeant who served two combat tours in Iraq, I have spent time watching the protesters and am impressed at their commitment to peaceful demonstration. I may not agree with all of what they are demanding but their resolve to be heard nonviolently is highly commendable.
Perhaps Castro should take a moment to examine himself and see if his wealth has clouded his humanity.
