Is it morally, ethically right?

This is an open letter to the Davis City Council, city manager and chief of police. Based on information posted online Thursday, it appears the city of Davis intends to shut down the Occupy Davis encampment in Central Park.

While I am sure the Occupy protest movement doesn’t speak for everyone in Davis, I’m equally certain it does speak for many of us, especially those of us who are watching our incomes spiral downward as our family expenses continue to rise rapidly.

I understand there may be valid safety and sanitation issues. It appears to me the peaceful protesters have made efforts to ameliorate such problems. I also understand there is a city ordinance against camping on city property, which, by the way, is also my property as well as that of the protesters.

I would ask those making the decision to shut down the encampment if they have never intentionally violated an ordinance or law. Have you never deliberately exceeded the speed limit, for example?

While the city and those making and enforcing the order to close down the Occupy encampment are well within their legal rights to do so, I question whether what you are doing is morally and ethically right.

I ask that the city of Davis continue to be the bright star that not only allows people to exercise their constitutional right to protest but actually aids and abets that right.

  1. It’s also my property to share and when they’re squating on it I can’t use it.
    I want them out.

  2. I want them out too. The city has been more than patient in dealing with the occupy movement, but time’s up. Last time I checked there wasn’t a “righteous cause” exception to the city ordinances.

  3. I agree as well. Squatting on public property 24/7 is not a constitutional right. I could sympathize with the protester if they were staying for few days just to be visible, but this is getting ridiculous and inconveniencing the general public. I am beginning to feel they are wasting public resources.

  4. Okay OWS people. You made your point, time to pack up your tents and go. The rest of us want to use the park again. Move along please. Thanks.
