Police Pepper Spray UCD Student
Dear Editor,
I am another UC Davis alum who is outraged by the show of force on Friday by the Campus Police against the peacefully protesting students. The video shows a formation of police, fully attired in riot gear and armed with rifles of some sort. We soon watch them spray the students with yellow pepper spray. It is a horrific image and that’s bad enough, but what indeed were they going to do with the rifles ? Are they for tear gas or something else? Whatever the case, they are intimidating in the extreme.
Those students are us. They are our sons and daughters, our grandchildren, our nieces and nephews, our friends and neighbors. When the Campus Police assaulted these UCD students, they assaulted the whole community. We are all gravely concerned about the continuing increase in fees and understand why the students are protesting. UC was once all of our university; three generations of my family have earned undergraduate and graduate degrees there and I used to be proud of that. I hope that the faculty and students will have a large role in the investigation into the administration’s decision on this police action.
