Seize this moment to teach

Watching the Occupy movement evolve over the past several months from camping in urban parks to protesting at and occupying college campuses, I am disappointed in the responses by those campuses. Responses have ranged from tolerance to assault — as we in Davis bore witness to not long ago. None that I am aware of have seized upon this moment to do what their charters require of them — teach.

The issues presented by the Occupy movement touch on many of the disciplines taught at our universities — economics, social justice, public policy, public heath, communications — the thread goes on and on.

Engage our students. Challenge them not with batons and pepper spray but with knowledge. Explore their platforms. Question assumptions. If there is a truth to be found, isn’t a university the place to begin the journey, not end it?
