Stop fireworks, for pets’ sake
On Sunday, Christi Skibbins of the Davis Chamber of Commerce submitted a warning to pet owners regarding fireworks at the Celebrate Davis! event. Every year, wherever and whenever fireworks displays are put on, many pets panic and run away from home to be lost forever, either hit by a car or because they lose their way. In any case, at the risk of being a spoilsport, fireworks are simply another form of animal cruelty.
Fireworks on the Fourth of July must be tolerated by all because they are in the tradition of the founding of our republic. However, to endanger the lives and well-being of animals for the sake of a commercial event is needless and should not be tolerated.
I thank Ms. Skibbins for doing what she has done. However, if she and the Chamber of Commerce really cared about the well-being of animals in this community, they would stop fireworks displays at Celebrate Davis! in the future.

I don’t have a pet but I don’t think we need two lame 15 min firework evenings a year less than two months apart. If Davis downtown has money to waste for firework on a weekday evening, why not spend it on Jul 4 to make it a bit fancier?
Or maybe keep those pennies in the coffers to help offset the clean up costs after Picnic Day 2012.
