UCD alumni still have reasons to be proud

Many UC Davis alumni have been writing, saying they are ashamed of their alma mater — which makes sense, since the coverage of the pepper spraying has focused on the people in power, the ones who are at fault.

I am writing to tell you that these people are not the faces of UC Davis. The students are the faces of UC Davis, and after attending the protest on Monday, I think you have so, so much to be proud of in them. Few things have moved me as much as watching hundreds of people so passionate and so peaceful at the same time.

My former English teacher had a quote on his wall: “I treat you as a gentleman, not because you are a gentleman, but because I am one.”

UCD students seem to have made this their mantra. In the past few days, they have given respect where it was not earned time and time again. They have remained peaceful while fearing for their own safety. They have stayed silent when anyone else would have been screaming.

If anyone has brought shame upon our university, it is certainly not the students.
