What’s next for crowd control?
In response to Professor Quirino Paris, et al., a big amen! I was living and working in Berkeley during the Free Speech Movement in the 1960s. At that time, the police used tear gas spraying to disperse the crowds around Sproul Plaza. Now, with the advances (?) in technology, they are using pepper spray.
Will a mini-atom bomb be the next technological advance in crowd control? I worked with some of the atom-bomb discoverers, who later regretted their help in producing such a deadly weapon of mass destruction. Global shame has come upon the entire UC system due to this chancellor’s “get it done” attitude with the police.

The truth is if the pepper spray had been used effectively, the way it was designed to be used, it would have done what it was supposed to do. Instead, the person sprayed from a distance of about 4 feet and did it over and over. A complete no-no. They should hold him accountable for not using it responsibly.
Pepper spray is a non lethal self defense spray. When used the way it is supposed to be used, it causes discomfort but leaves no permanent damage. The way it was used at UC Davis was uncalled for and should not be allowed to happen again.
