Picnic Day

Picnic Day is golden for classes of 1963 and earlier

Aggies Dianne and Bill Hollingshead of Davis are always excited to return to their alma mater for Picnic Day.

But this year’s celebration — on Saturday, April 20 — is even more special. It’s been 50 years since Dianne graduated from UC Davis in 1963, making her a member of the university’s Golden Society. Dianne, 72, joins her husband, who was in the Class of 1960.

The Cal Aggie Alumni Association honors Golden Society members with a whole slate of activities for Picnic Day weekend, culminating with a reunion luncheon on Saturday.

Bill Hollingshead, 75, said it’s important for alumni to stay engaged with their university, and the Golden Society Weekend is a perfect opportunity. He enjoys many Picnic Day activities, especially the reunion.

“I always run across three or four people with whom I went to college,” he said. “Last year I met up with some who were in the Aggie band with me.” Bill continues to play the clarinet in the UCD Concert Band and is a guest lecturer for the music department on campus.

It’s also a chance for graduates to see what’s new.

“I would say they should come back and see how much the university has grown,” Bill said. “See the expansion of the buildings and campus, and the research that has brought it up to being a world-renowned university.”

Tickets to the entire Golden Weekend are $50, and include the following events:

* Vintage Aggies Wine Tasting: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center, UCD.
