JV roundup: DHS gets two big girls soccer wins

It was Davis 20, opponents 0 as the Blue Devil junior varsity girls soccer team rolled over Monterey Trail and Elk Grove last week. First, DHS beat The Trail, 12-0, on the road. ‘The Cabin in the Woods’: Ghoulish and giddy

When a basement trap door suddenly slams open, who could resist descending those darkened stairs? Well, anybody with a reasonable sense of self-preservation, which apparently doesn’t include, from left, Marty (Fran Kranz), Curt (Chris Hemsworth) and Jules (Anna Hutchison). Courtesy photo

“The Cabin in the Woods” 4 stars Starring: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz and Jesse Williams Rating: R, for strong, gory horror violence, profanity, drug use, sexuality and brief nudity Folks will chortle — quite enthusiastically — about this one for a while. Although looking every inch like a … Continue Reading

‘American Reunion’: Diminishing returns

Wanting to help his father (Eugene Levy, center) out of a depressed funk, Jim (Jason Biggs, left) unwisely brings him to a pre-reunion bash thrown by Stifler (Seann William Scott). Unwise, that is, because Stifler decides that Jim’s Dad can best appreciate the party after half a dozen stiff shots. Courtesy photo

“American Reunion” Three stars Starring: Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Seann William Scott, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Eugene Levy, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, Dania Ramirez Rating: R, for relentless crude and sexual content, profanity, nudity, brief drug use and teen drinking High school reunions, in great part trading on nostalgia, promise much … Continue Reading

Scofflaw bicyclists give all a bad name

BobDunning2W

In this wonderful city we call Davis, there is only one subject that’s off limits when it comes to criticism. That subject is bicycles. Dare to say anything critical about this city’s bicyclists and the God of Two-Wheelers will come out of the sky to strike you down. The other day I noted in this space … Continue Reading

We have splashdown as DHS boys eye swim crown

DHS junior Connor Stapleton works out on Wednesday as the Blue Devils prepare for the first swim meet of the 2012 season this weekend. Fred Gladdis/Enterprise photo

* Editor’s note: This is the ninth in a 13-part series previewing Davis High’s spring sports. Should Davis High’s boys swimmers start hitting pool walls before the rest of their 2012 competition, it could mean the beginning of another big run for the Blue Devils. They are 40 strong but include only five seniors. Fourteen of … Continue Reading

The Oscar follies: Handicapping the Academy Awards

George Clooney is nominated for best actor in “The Descendants.” Courtesy photo

The Golden Globes may be more freewheeling and snarky; the People’s Choice Awards may be more populist. For prestige and historical significance, though, nothing compares to the Academy Awards.

True, the show can be creaky, overlong and sycophantic. I sometimes worry that the folks onstage will break their arms, from patting each other — and themselves — on the back so much.

But the Oscar ceremony is what it is …

DHS girls roll past visiting Whitney

DHS' Tori Powell concentrates hard on this drive to the hoop on Tuesday. Powell was looking for two of her 18 points that helped the Blue Devils easily defeat Whitney, 70-43, at The Cage. Fred Gladdis/Enterprise photo

All the planets finally aligned for the Lady Blue Devils. Well, all but two … In an impressive home performance on Tuesday, the Davis High girls basketball team used a lane-filling defense and a good shooting night to rush past Whitney, 70-43, in a home nonleague encounter. Santa still has plenty of swing

Xmas David IanW

Starting this annual column with an excellent disc always feels like a good omen, so let’s turn first to Ellis Marsalis’ “A New Orleans Christmas Carol” (ELM Records 19790). Long before Wynton and his many talented brothers became young cubs on the jazz scene, Daddy Ellis was roaring with the assurance of a venerable lion. … Continue Reading

Music brings comfort to children who need it most

Kathy Lorenzato leads a music session with patient Juan Garcia with participation from volunteers Mary Hopkins, center, and Kimberly Dunbar, top right, and hospital intern Dan Beseda, left. Sue Cockrell/Enterprise photo

Whether it’s distracting the youngest patients from their pain with silly songs, engaging a bored teen stuck in isolation with piano lessons, or singing softly with a family at the bedside of a dying child, longtime Davis resident Kathy Lorenzato uses her passion for music to bring some measure of comfort to children who need it the most.

She has met, entertained and befriended more children than she can count. She is a constant, a familiar face to children with chronic diseases like sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis who repeatedly find themselves hospitalized.
